How Compatible Is HDMI? HDMI is fully backward compatible with PCs, displays and consumer electronics devices incorporating the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) standard. Both HDMI and DVI were pioneered by Silicon Image and are based on TMDS®, Silicon Image’s powerful, high-speed, serial link technology. HDMI supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports 8-channel digital audio, and with 5 Gbps of bandwidth, HDMI can accommodate future enhancements and requirements. Because HDMI was designed specifically for consumer electronics applications, it offers an array of additional consumer enhancements. As digital content can manifest itself in a variety of sizes, resolutions and formats, HDMI-enabled systems will automatically configure to display content in the most effective format. In addition, if implemented in a specific device, HDMI enables a single remote point and click, allowing manufacturers to deliver home theater systems that automatically configure from a single command from a remote control — turning on or off the components necessary to view a DVD, listen to a CD, or watch cable or satellite TV. What is the difference between HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.3a, or 1.3b? How can I identify which HDMI products support a specific feature, such as DVD Audio or Deep Color? What Is Firmware Upgradeable? What is the difference between Active HDMI and Passive HDMI? |

I honestly thought I could never have this level of performance given my limited budget. Thanks Panasonic and Tigerdirect.

I got this TV at a big box on sale several months ago and have been very pleased. No problems, easy set up, great picture. I viewed the similar 720P model side by side and reviews said you probably couldn’t see the difference on this screen size. I could and I’m very happy I paid the extra for the 1080p. I’ve bought plenty of other items from Tiger and have never had a problem but I wanted it that day so I went to the big box to be able to bring it home that day… only reason I didn’t get this via Tiger.

With the TH42PZ85U plasma TV, Panasonic has achieved picture quality that’s sure to blow you away. The increased native contrast ratio of 30,000:1 ensures exceptionally rich blacks and stunning whites will definitely keep you entertained.
An anti-reflective filter keeps unwanted reflections to a minimum. The result is arguably the most detailed plasma TV in the world.
The TH42PZ85U includes a built-in NTSC/ATSC/QAM digital tuner to receive standard definition, high definition, and digital cable content. The set includes 3 HDMI connections, which enables the transfer of high definition video and audio via a single cable.
Panasonic designed this TV for convenience. Panasonic’s VIERA Link allows users to operate - through HDMI connections - all their home theater components by pressing one button on the TV remote. An HDMI cable carries not only digital video and audio signals, but control signals too.
x.v. Color is the new standard for high definition color. You see 1.8 times more reds, greens, and blues of the RGB spectrum. x.v. Color offers the wider color gamut while Deep Color brings on a better bit-depth. The result is vivid, accurate color with less artifacts.
The best images you can ever view on a Panasonic plasma don’t have anything to do with HDTV. Users can share their JPEG photos taken with an SD Memory Card-compatible digital camera on the TH42PZ85U through the set’s SD card slot. Panasonic also includes with this set GalleryPlayer, which allows users to enjoy the world’s finest high definition art and photography on this HD plasma TV.
Progressive Cinema Scan (2:3 pulldown) achieves exceptionally faithful movie reproduction through a sophisticated analog-to-digital conversion. Movies on film are converted to NTSC interlaced video for television by a process known as telecine conversion, in which the 24 frame-per-second film is converted to video at 60 fields per second. The fields are then paired to create 30-frame-per-second 480i video.
Some of the frames will contain dissimilar pairs of fields derived from two different frames of the original film, which causes artifacts. Panasonic’s Progressive Cinema Scan circuitry converts 480i video to 480p while restoring the original frames of the film for a more authentic movie reproduction. This widescreen TV features a width-to-height ratio similar to movie theater screens, providing a theater-like experience at home.
Incredibly slim and elegant, you’d never guess that the TH42PZ85U includes an integrated 20-watt, side-firing speaker system for maximum stereo separation. But just wait until you turn it on and crank it up. A virtual surround sound system creates an authentic and exciting surround sound effect from only the two stereo speakers while preserving the clarity and definition. This expansive audio provides a fitting complement to the incredible picture quality of Panasonic’s plasma TV.
